Bailey

Bailey

As you can see from the photos, Bailey is a magnificent cat.Yes, he is slightly overweight, but mostly he is just HUGE.With his enormous paws and fur everywhere, he looks like a child constructed him out of spare parts.Bailey had been adopted by a kind woman as a companion for her other FIV+ cat, who she thought might be lonely during the day while she was at work.Unfortunately, Bailey became quite aggressive with her other cat, to the point of causing injury.Because it is very difficult to find a home for an FIV+ cat, she was hoping that Tabby’s Place could help.We said that we could, but that the waiting list for the FIV Suite was very long. She said she would hold him as long as necessary, because she had no other options. So, Bailey had to live in a large crate in her apartment for a year, until a spot opened up for him here.Bailey1.jpgWhen Bailey was in Quarantine, we noticed that he drank a lot of water and urinated excessively. We immediately suspected diabetes or kidney disease. But, his initial bloodwork did not show either of these diseases. So,we took the conservative approach and observed him for another week.We then repeated the bloodwork and discovered that he was now diabetic!

We started Bailey on insulin. But, we also had a abdominal ultrasound done, which showed that his kidneys were enlarged.Enlarged kidneys can be caused by many things, but cancer is always a concern. So, we have scheduled Bailey for a needle aspirate of his kidneys (this is a minimally-invasive kind of biopsy).Bailey2.jpgAlthough we don’t yet know what is going on with his kidneys, we are quite concerned about Bailey’s multiple problems. And, while he is quite affectionate and a great looking cat, we know that he has minimal chances of being adopted.
