Update for Bacon

Did someone call Bacon?

Dear supporters of Bacon,

It’s been a bustling month at Tabby’s Place, between a small ringworm outbreak in our Lobby (now happily resolved), and some much-awaited renovations to our original cat suites.

But amid all the hubbub, Bacon is blissfully unaware.

The day I arrive to do my usual volunteering, I sneak over to see my favorite boy. As usual, he’s fast asleep on his comfy, cozy pillow in the corner of the room.

Or so I think! Even though his eyes are closed, and he isn’t moving a muscle, with his arm wrapped across his face (making snoozing look delicious), I wonder if he’s not just cat napping.

I call out, “Hey Buddy. How are you doing?”

No response. Maybe he really is asleep. This is always my dilemma. I don’t want to wake him up if he’s sleeping. But, I’m only here once a week, and I don’t want to miss quality time with him.

I try again. “Hey…” but this time I call out, “Hey Bacon, are you really sleeping?”

Well, his head rears up. His eyes open. I almost can’t believe that he knows his name.

Now he is up and about—wandering around. I grab the snack bag and shake it. And, of course, that’s all he needs to hear. I drop a few snacks near him, and he gobbles them up in a flash. I drop a few more down, and he gobbles them, too.

I am so hungry!

Now he is really awake. He does his usual wandering around the room. He goes over for a sip of water. He comes over to sniff me out. I pet him a few times. He goes into his house and then comes out again.

I observe that he’s looking great. His coat is groomed, and he is looking as handsome as ever.

The next week, when I arrive, he’s eating up a storm. His food bowl is full, and he’s chowing down like he hasn’t eaten in a week. When I call out his name, he glances over briefly.

So I sit down and watch. His face is far into the bowl, and I wager he would disappear in it if he could. Then he stretches. Comes over to me for a quick visit and sniff, and wanders off for a drink of water.  Somewhere in the middle of all that, he grooms himself.

Am I handsome, or what?

We have a brief chat, and I remind him that Halloween is almost here. But Bacon has a rule—no dressing up on Halloween. I don’t blame him. I can’t help but think what a life this kid has.

The room he lives in is purposefully kept quiet. He has the bumpers on the walls to prevent any serious injuries. Snacks. Water. Food. He has the good life. And. he gets premier medical care.

This month Bacon was sedated for his routine physical exam, phenobarbital level blood test, and (lucky him) a full brush out. The staff reports that they enjoy nuzzling Bacon’s silky fur and kissing his head when he’s not awake to object. You know how sensitive he can be.

A new bed for me! Thank you, dear sponsor friend.

On top of all that, Bacon received a multitude of special beds from a wonderful sponsor in NV, thoughtfully chosen based on what she knows about his needs. You can see him enjoying one in the photo.

That leads me to thank you again for your continued generosity. I love to come to Tabby’s Place and look at all the cats that have been rescued and given homes. I love to hear about the adoptions that continue to happen. Angela, our Development Director, has a special post on our website that not only talks about Halloween at Tabby’s Place, but also includes wonderful photos of cats in costumes.

No, you won’t see Bacon there. But there is a special event called Thanksgiving with the Cats on Saturday, November 22, from noon to 4 p.m.  We hope you can come to visit on that day and feed the cats in the general parts of the sanctuary a bit of turkey!

I also want to give a big shout-out to Catster’s Heroes of the Pet World, who included a delightful article with everything you wanted to know about us—the inspiration for this shelter, the cats, the people most responsible, etc. It is beautifully written and a joy to read. Click here to enjoy.

Bacon and I thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
