Update for Bacon

Greetings, Sponsors!

Bacon has joined the ranks of a finicky foodie this month. While we’d otherwise be thrilled to have a cat with a fine palate, Bacon is one of our cats that we wish hasn’t developed such refined tastes.

As you know, our dear Bacon needs medication to help manage his seizure disorder. We’ve found a combination of medications that are working, as well as they can, to prevent seizures. Unfortunately, there’s another issue we’ve had to face since Bacon has arrived at Tabby’s Place:  How do we medicate him?

This question also took us a while to solve…and question…and solve again…and so on. The problem with medicating Bacon is that we simply can’t, safely, medicate him orally. Theoretically, it’s possible, but we’d have an extremely upset Bacon fighting with two (or more!) of our staff.

Bacon, while curled up seemingly peacefully sleeping much of the day, is more than ready to put up a fight when anyone dares attempt to restrain him. Oh, and did we mention, scruffing Bacon is out of the question? If you want to see a very angry, fighting, screaming Bacon intensify his efforts by one hundredfold, simply scruff him. Overall, this method puts a great deal of stress on Bacon, something that he absolutely doesn’t need.

With that said, you can imagine just how much of a struggle it is to ensure Bacon receives his medications. We found a way, one that worked for years, until it didn’t. Bacon’s always been somewhat of a foodie, enjoying a scrumptious wet food containing his medications mixed in, deciding it was boring, and causing us to find a replacement. No problem, we scan the shelves, test out new food, and move on. Bacon always demands the tastiest Fancy Feast, Meow Mix, niche gourmet brands, and baby food. This time, we find ourselves with a different problem.

Bacon has decided to refuse wet food that contains his medications. Initially, we assumed it was another instance of trying to find a different food. Our worry grew as we realized this was not a matter of finding a different flavor of food. For a cat literally named after a food, Bacon is surely the most finicky cat we have. We’re trying our best, Bacon’s medications are critical to his stabilization. It’s going to be an uphill battle as we continue to try to consistently ensure Bacon receives his medications twice a day.

Stay tuned for next month’s update to see how we (hopefully) have fixed this problem.  Thank you for all you do for Bacon!

Rebecca
