Update for Princess Bubblegum

Greetings, Princess Bubblegum Sponsors!

Hope you are all enjoying this lovely spring weather. We sure have been. Our windows are open for maximum cat pleasure. Princess Bubblegum is loving the open windows and fresh air.

Princess Bubblegum is doing fantastic! Her weight is up to the highest it has ever been. She is currently 8.1 pounds. Last year, before she decided she didn’t like her food with enzymes, she was hovering below 8 pounds. We are super happy about her weight.

Her kidney values are also better. While kidney disease is not reversible, we can slow down its progression — and we are! Princess Bubblegum’s kidneys seem to like the prescription kidney food. We are feeding her a mixture of Hills K/D plus the Royal Canin varieties of renal food. This keeps PBG’s food interesting (to her, at least) while also maintaining good kidney health.

Her phosphorus levels are still elevated, so we have started adding the aluminum hydroxide to her food again. This is a binder that prevents some of the phosphate in her food from reaching her kidneys. It’s an odorless, tasteless powder and she has eaten in the past with no problems. Sometimes the prescription kidney foods are enough to keep the phosphorus levels down; in other cases, you need both kidney food and a phosphate binder.

The only alarming part of her bloodwork is that her liver values were slightly elevated. This has not previously been an issue for Princess Bubblegum. We will redo her bloodwork in a month to continue monitoring her liver and kidney values.

Princess Bubblegum also appears to be very happy. She’s very sweet, very playful and also very sassy when she feels like it. She truly is a Princess!

PBG was at Tabby’s Place for the day this past Monday for her recheck. One of our volunteers (who is also a PBG sponsor, hello Lynn!), went to visit PBG and the princess hissed at her. That’s what I meant when I said earlier that PBG can be a sassy girl!

Thanks again to all of you who continue to sponsor our sweet (and sometimes sassy) Princess Bubblegum!
