Update for Jude

Dear Jude Friend,

At the end of last month’s update, I let you know we were testing to see if Jude is diabetic. This month I can tell you she is diabetic and started receiving insulin shots. This poor girl can’t get a break; she already had enough medical issues without adding something else.

I have to do a blood glucose (BG) test on her every day, to test her BG levels. This is done by a small prick to her ear to get a tiny drop of blood. Jude is not a fan of having this done, as I’m sure you can imagine, but she’s not as bad as I thought she would be. I sit her between my legs, facing away from me, and do the ear prick very quickly. She gives a quick growl but otherwise lets me do what I need to do for her.

After I check her BG, I administer the insulin (if her BG is high enough to need it). So far she is only requiring insulin once a day, instead of the normal amount for cats, which is twice a day. I will continue to monitor her BG level daily, so I can keep a close eye on it.

It’s kind of strange, because diabetes is sugar in the bloodstream, and since Jude became diabetic she has been a little sweeter in her personality too. I’m not saying she is ready to lay in my lap and take a nap, but she has been letting me pet her a lot more, and even seeming to enjoy it! I know it has nothing to do with the diabetes, but it’s a fun coincidence.

Other than adding in a new medical issue Jude had a good month. She only had one seizure this month, and it passed quickly. Otherwise, she has enjoyed a seizure-free month.

Jude had a foster kitten, Kevin, in her room for a very short time—I’m talking minutes. He was way too active and made her angry, so he had to move out of Jude’s area. Jude likes things quiet and calm, and a crazy kitten is not either of these things.

We have had a lot of sunny days lately, and every sunny day you can find Jude laying in a sunbeam. She looks like a beautiful angel with the sun on her fur.

That’s all the Jude news for now. As always, thank you so much for your support of Jude. To say we need your help with all her medical costs is an understatement, so we can never thank you enough.

Your correspondent,
Karina
