Update for Bacon

Dear Sponsor,

I hope that you are well and that you had a fabulous Fourth. Since Tabby’s Place was closed on Independence Day, there weren’t any visitors; however, there were lots of staff and volunteers to take care of us. All in all, I had a pleasant day!

The past month has been a good one for me. In fact, Angela Hartley, Development Director of Tabby’s Place, said that I’d had “a mellow month.” She came up with the perfect phrase! My life has been great! I’ve been healthy, have been keeping out of trouble, and have been enjoying life. No matter how busy or hectic life is in other areas of the sanctuary, it’s usually quiet and peaceful in here. As you probably know, that’s the way I like it.

The staff members take turns giving us our medications. I like it when Jonathan Rosenberg, the Founder and Executive Director of Tabby’s Place, takes care of Sally and me. For a person with such an impressive title and an important job, he definitely has a lighter side. Would you believe that he sings to us? He does! The songs sound familiar, but I think he makes up his own words. It’s never dull with the Boss around! He once told me that I was “one toasty guy.”

When my secretary Lynn visits, she always brings me toys and treats. On her last visit, she put several treats on the floor in front of me. I looked at them but didn’t eat any. She looked confused and told me, “Bacon, they’re treats; you like them.” I still didn’t eat any. I was trying to teach her a lesson! I wanted to be fed; I didn’t want to eat treats off the floor. Finally, she picked up a treat and placed it in the palm of her hand. I then took the treat gently from her hand. She had learned the lesson and fed me the rest of the teats in a civilized manner. I guess this cat taught a former teacher a lesson!

Lynn offered me several toys, but I didn’t really want to play with a toy. I ignored the toys, looked up at Lynn, and walked over to the gate. I stood at the gate and looked back at Lynn. She didn’t move; she just sat there! I walked back to her, stared at her, and then walked back to the gate. Again, I looked back at her. Didn’t she understand that she was supposed to follow me to the gate? I wanted to get out of the office! I wanted to explore! I love our office, but it can become boring. Would you like to be in the same room, day after day after day? I don’t think you’d be too happy. The office is a wonderful home, but I wouldn’t mind a brief change of scenery. Will I ever be able to wander the halls of Tabby’s Place? I know I wouldn’t be allowed out on my own. That’s okay; I wouldn’t mind a tour guide.

There’s one other thing I’d like to change. Can you guess what that is? If you guessed that it involves Sally, you’d be right. I really want to be her friend, but she tries to pretend that I don’t exist. Every single time I go over to her cage, she avoids looking at me. I know she knows I’m there because she starts flicking her tail. I realize that’s her way of telling me, “Go away! Leave me alone! Get lost!”

I guess Sally doesn’t understand the importance of friendship, unless it relates to Karina. Sally absolutely adores Karina; I do too, but that doesn’t mean I don’t want other friends. I bet Sally doesn’t know that July 30th is World Friendship Day or the International Day of Friendship. She probably doesn’t know that August 5th is Friendship Day in the United States.

Sally might not understand the importance of friendship, but I do and know you do, too. I consider you, dear sponsor, a true friend. Your care and support mean so much to me. I don’t know where I’d be without you! Thank you!

Best wishes,
Bacon
