Sonora
“Confront a child, a puppy, and a kitten with a sudden danger; the child will turn instinctively for assistance, the puppy will grovel in abject submission, the kitten will brace its tiny body for afrantic resistance.”
— Saki (H. H. Munro), The Achievement of the Cat
Tiny Sonora strongly resembles that literary kitten. She was estimated to be six months old when shearrived at Tabby’s Place in February 2015, but she could have passed for much younger due to her size.
This little girl had been found outside by Animal Control during the coldest, snowiest New Jersey winter in many years.
She was outside on her own long enough to develop an upper respiratory infection and to be infected by parasites. Both of those were knocked out by medication, but she also needs something she can’t receive from a pill or a syringe. She needs affection as much as she needs food, water or air.
Sonora mistrusts humans. She presses herself as low as possible in her litter pan, so that only her golden eyes are visible, revealing dilated pupils that display her fear. Her ears are laid flat against her head, and she hisses as if to warn intruders that she’ll tear them to shreds.
It is impossible to say when she will choose to trust humans. It won’t happen overnight, but we areconfident that it will. She should be young enough to forget the weeks of fending for herself, to help overcome any memories of being alone in the world at much too young an age.
We are hoping you will help support this little cat with the heart of a lion.
