Floyd

Floyd

Floyd’s owner was elderly and her health was failing. She had a number of special needs cats and as her health worsened, she found herself having more and more trouble caring for them properly.Floyd was especially problematic, since he is elderly (15 years old), as well as FIV+ and diabetic. As you can imagine, there are not many places for Floyd. We were very happy to be able to accept Floyd after he was on our weaiting list for several months.Floyd is absolutely adorable (as you can see from these photos) and has a wonderful personality. He is affectionate and loves people. But, what Floyd really loves is wet food — and lots of it.When Floyd hears employees arrive in the morning, he begins his wailing for wet food.Floyd is our loudest cat and his cries can be heard throughout the facility. The wailing does not stop until he has consumed 1 1/2 cans of wet food (these are the 6.5 oz cans, mind you).Floyd1.jpgDiabetes results when an animal’s pancreas is unable to produce adequate amounts of insulin, a hormone especially important for metabolizing carbohydrates. The primary signs of diabetes are increased drinking, increased urination, and weight loss.Left untreated, diabetes can be painful and, even, fatal.Diabetes is most often treated by the administration of insulin, to replace that which the body isn’t producing.

Floyd is on insulin, though he is also fed a special diet that keeps his insulin requirement to a minimum.Fortunately, we have been able to stabilize Floyd’s glucose level and he is now stable.Floyd2.jpgFloyd is a wonderful cat and, despite his age and multiple disabilities, we remain hopeful that he will be adopted. But, there is no doubt that his chances of adoption are not great and he will likely live his life out at Tabby’s Place.

Please consider sponsoring Floyd and helping us to care for him.
