We could fill an orchard with all the reasons Berry is the best. His bright eyes see the “beautiful” in everyone. He has the courage of seventy superheroes, combined. He plays with so much pizzazz, he could convince the gloomiest grump that life is luscious. And when he really gets excited, his hind legs swoop up overhead, like wings.

This final detail is bittersweet.

Berry’s unique physique, with bowed back legs and a hopping gait, is due to spina bifida. This congenital condition results when a kitten’s spinal column doesn’t close properly in utero. Symptoms range from mild to severe, including diminished reflexes in the hind legs, malformed vertebrae, and urinary and fecal incontinence.

A kitten with such monumental needs does not have many places to turn. It would be easy to label him a “hopeless cat.”

But we don’t believe in labels around here (other than for jelly jars). All that matters is that Berry is a “Tabby’s Place cat.”

When you’re a Tabby’s Place cat, there’s no bitterness that can’t become sweet. Berry’s little body is in good hands, whether they’re skritching his chin or gently expressing his bladder. In Berry’s eyes, everyone is family, including his neurologist and valiant veterinary team. He will have everything he needs to thrive, no matter what.
