What does it take to be the ultimate Tabby’s Place cat?

As a sanctuary for cats from hopeless situations, we have the privilege of loving over one hundred living legends. Every Tabby’s Place resident has outlived the impossible. The world’s most fragile cats are our mighty heroes.

But even in a fellowship of phenoms, one gold heart is in a class of her own.

What does it take to be the ultimate Tabby’s Place cat? Ask Regina. Her name may mean “Queen,” but our little lady’s realm was in tatters. Infected with the most feared disease, feline leukemia virus (FeLV), Regina had nowhere to turn. Others raised the drawbridge, leaving our queen without a castle or a cuddle to call her own.

But FeLV was only the start of Regina’s anxious alphabet. Our dainty royal is also paraplegic. One sweet cat contained the two most daunting Special Needs in the feline kingdom. Regina would need a specialized environment. She would need her little bladder expressed multiple times a day, as well as frequent baths. She would need long-haul love that never wearies.

What does it take to be the ultimate Tabby’s Place cat? A miracle in one syllable: “yes!”

Tabby’s Place lives to love the cats no one else can handle. It’s our ultimate honor to become Regina’s royal family!

Her highness gavottes in her own giddy way, using her strong front legs to scamper freely. There is nothing sickly about her – only sprightly, serene, and smitten with everyone she meets. She may be a queen, but she’s as joyous as a jester every time someone stops to snuggle or play.

What does it take to be the ultimate Tabby’s Place cat? Loyal subjects! Regina requires a high level of care, and our skilled team works hard to keep her healthy. We monitor Regina’s health with vigilance, as infection can be life-threatening to a cat with FeLV. She lives in our Quinn’s Corner expansion, where FeLV+ cats thrive without exposing uninfected cats to the virus.

Like most paraplegic cats, Regina requires help relieving herself. We express her bladder daily and treat her for the gastrointestinal issues to which she is prone. Regina has a tough time keeping herself pristine, so we also regularly bathe her.

This care is costly, and Regina will likely reign at Tabby’s Place for years – perhaps even all her life. But we are the rich ones. No matter how tenderly we dote on Regina, she is several steps ahead of us. Our radiant ruler is determined to make sure everyone feels loved.
