Dear Supporters of Bacon,
Happy July to you!
I visit Bacon usually once a week. I don’t stay that long, because I know he can get overstimulated. It’s so super important to arrive and be calmer than calm, so as not to rile up this very cute but fussy cat.
Sometimes I feel like I actually should be tiptoeing through the room where he lives and then whispering his name. If he could read, I’d print out my conversation with him—anything to avoid distressing our sensitive boy.

But then, Bacon does something that makes me rethink my approach. Sometimes he wanders around like he is the king of his domain. He looks me straight in the eye and meows for snacks.
“Do you have a twin?” I want to ask him. “Has there been a cat snatching, and this lookalike cat is not really Bacon at all?”
For example, I go to visit, and he is wide awake. I shake the snack bag, put out his bowl, and soon he is scarfing up those snacks like nobody’s business. I sit down near him, and he is all over me, leaning into my leg, sniffing my hand. And then, miracles of miracles, I begin to pet him. Ten minutes later, he’s swaying this way and that, in reaction to my petting.
But I digress. I should not be entirely surprised by Bacon’s behavior. Rumor has it that Bacon is a “secret thief,” making attempts—more so lately, it seems—to pilfer snacks from anyone working in his suite.

Do you remember that a few months ago, according to Colin, his human suitemate, Bacon jumped onto a desk, knocked over coffee, and caused a bit of chaos?
I shouldn’t have been too surprised to learn about Bacon’s latest bold move. He’s on Colin’s desk—which Colin assures me is well-protected from any coffee mishaps—when, out of the blue, Bacon leaps up and lands on Colin’s shoulder!
“What did you do?” I ask Colin.
Colin, as nonchalant as can be about Bacon’s risk-taking and derring-do behavior, smiles and says, “I took a photo.”
I present the evidence for all you skeptics out there.

Colin then explains that Bacon was only up there for a minute or two. But still . . . I think to myself—has Bacon found the most perfect suitemate, the guy who understands him, who puts up with his antics, and loves him despite everything?
Later, I wonder—what if I put a snack on my shoulder? “Will Bacon jump up and . . . ?” But, no, I won’t do that! That is a habit we don’t encourage with our cats, even when they are tiny kittens.
In medical news, Bacon has continued to experience seizures—on and off, and some a bit intense. As always, our medical team works carefully to keep our brave boy as comfortable as possible. Thank you for making this possible with your steadfast generosity.
This month’s good news includes the fact that the air-conditioning system is working again (after an HVAC system replacement), so the sanctuary is filled with “cool cats” just in time for all the hot weatherg. And in more good news, the annual Kitten Shower was a great success, so many of our littlest residents will be heading to their forever homes soon.
Bacon and I want to thank you, as always, for your continued generosity. Bacon is living his best life because of you. Enjoy the summer!
Your correspondent,
Kate
