Two old ladies

Two old ladies

8358081649_756134a0fa_mThis is the story of two old ladies.

Cecily upstages Angel, as captured by Mark
Cecily excelling at one of her core competencies: upstaging others. As captured by Mark

Cecily is the kind of old lady who isn’t an “old lady” in any of the conventional ways. She sincerely prefers One Direction to Lawrence Welk. She’d be right at home on Advanced Style. She turns the heads of younger tomcats. (Yes, Steve, I’m looking at you.)

Gigi, on the other hand, is very much a Lawrence Welk-watching old lady. But that’s okay, because her favorite thing is one of the very best old lady things: hugs.

I’m sure Danielle thinks it as often any of of us, but, perhaps because of her longer tenure in the rescue world, she doesn’t say “I NEED TO ADOPT (CAT) OR I WILL DIE!!!!” quite as often as we weaker creatures. So I knew Something was up when she stumbled into my office and swooned, “I need to have Gigi.” When my face formed a question mark, Danielle immediately shouted (and she is a non-shouter): “SHE GIVES HUGS!”

Gigi, just hangin' and chillin'. Also by Mark.

This I had to see. I came. I saw. I was hugged.

Danielle was despondent. “What if she doesn’t get a home? She needs to give hugs.”

The plot thickened faster than instant pistachio Jell-O. (Which isn’t instant enough for me. But I digress.) An adopter came in seeking an old lady…and she chose Cecily.

But just as surely as the Golden Girls’ slammin’ 80’s fashions are back in style, there’s lovely news here: it just so happens there are homes for all kinds of elderly women.

If you guessed that Gigi was adopted next, you win 8 bowls of instant pistachio pudding.

And it gets sweeter: Gigi will have a young whippersnapper on whom to lavish her hugs and her appreciation of the French horn. Gigi’s new fam first fell for a youngster, our Nina, but her heart was hooked by the magic of geriatric cats. O. Henry would be proud of this twist: it was Cecily, old and bold and already spoken-for, who got Nina’s adopter thinking about elder felines. It was Gigi who sealed the deal.

And it’s Gigi who has a whooooole lotta hugging ahead. Huggable human aside, Gigi’s soon-to-be housemate Nina is no stranger to the pleasures of geriatric company. She joined us together with Betsy and Felix. But, more on them in a future post. You can only eat so much pistachio pudding in one night,* and only digest so many awesome cats’ tales in a day.

Old or young, give yourself a big hug and don your most slammin’ pastel pantsuit in honor of Cecily and Gigi tonight.

*Eight bowls. Eight bowls is how much, in case you were wondering. You’re welcome.
