Stomatitis, diabetic

Despite the connotations of his name, Shifty is a great favorite with both staff and volunteers. He is extremely fond of people and food, though not necessarily in that order. When he first came to us, however, things were very different. He was suffering greatly from severe stomatitis, an inflammation of the mouth, so he was a lot of pain and was barely eating. He had been living outside for some undetermined amount of time and was almost skin and bones when he was found. Due to his discomfort and distrust, he used to sit in the back of his cage staring down any humans, waiting for the right moment to try to escape, earning him the name “Shifty.”

Fast forward a couple of years. Over time, Shifty’s teeth have all been extracted in order to help with this medical condition. He is no longer in constant discomfort and has become much friendlier toward people, although he would do better in a home without small children. Shifty would also prefer to be an only cat, as he likes to hog all the limelight (and the food!). He is known for hovering over his feline roommates in order to grab their leftover wet food when they are finished eating. Due to his proclivity for food, he is now a hefty (but not chunky) boy with a shining coat and glowing green eyes.

These days, Shifty lives in our Lounge, where you’ll most often find him loafing on the couch. He’s not shy about asking for attention (or, truthfully, food).  We’d love to find a person or family who can cherish this boy just the way he is. Could that be you?
