Torts and torties

cat_lawyer_1_718b71A little over a week ago, I had the opportunity to attend the sixth annual Pennsylvania Bar Institute Animal Law Conference in Philadelphia.

That means that lawyers all over the Keystone State are devoting their time, gifts and love to thinking about and working for needy animals. Heaven knows the cats (and dogs, and eared sea lions) could use a good advocate. All of this gives me tremendous encouragement.

Update: Couch time for the Chester four

Twinkie and Cupcake under the couchThere’s happy news at Tabby’s Place this week: the four sweethearts rescued from the hoarding situation in Chester (the Dessert Kids, Twinkie, Cupcake, Strudel and Trifle) are out of quarantine and in a suite of their own.

Now begins the slow, patient work of helping them to learn that humans can love them well, and that life can be sweet. Times like this, I honestly wish we had a cat psychologist to help these babies process all they’ve seen and endured.

From despair to dessert: the Chester Four

TrifleWhile I certainly don’t condone their actions, my heart goes out to animal hoarders who genuinely believe they are helping - even “saving” - the creatures in their care. But it always seems to end in multi-species tragedy, as the hoarder is heartbroken when the animals are taken away, and the animals struggle to recover from the trauma of living in filthy, sardine-tight conditions (if they’re lucky enough, that is, to have a chance to recover).
